How to estimate window replacement cost
A home window replacement estimate comes down to four choices:
- Count your windows. List every window you plan to replace. Count bay and bow windows separately.
- Pick a frame material. Vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, wood or composite. Material is a major part of the cost of new windows.
- Choose insert or full-frame. Insert windows fit inside the existing frame; full-frame replaces it.
- Add glass and extras. Low-E glass adds about 10–20%. Bay and bow windows cost much more than standard windows.
per window = material price × (Low-E ? 1.15 : 1) + (full-frame ? extra : 0)
windows cost = number of windows × per window
bay/bow cost = bay/bow count × price each
total = windows cost + bay/bow cost
avg per window = total ÷ (windows + bay/bow)Worked example: 10 vinyl insert windows
10 vinyl insert windows at about $575 each = $5,750. With Low-E glass (+15%), about $6,613.

Insert vs full-frame replacement
An insert (pocket or retrofit) window fits inside the existing frame. In Angi’s breakdown that runs about $100–$300 per window. Full-frame replacement replaces the frame and costs about $180–$1,500 per window (Angi). Full-frame is needed when the frame is rotted or damaged.
Glass options
- Double-pane windows cost $400–$2,000 installed; triple-pane $450–$3,000 (HomeGuide). Fixr and Angi put triple-pane at $1,000–$4,000.
- Low-E coatings add 10–20% to the window price (HomeGuide).
- Triple-pane makes the most sense in cold climates.
Labor cost
Labor runs about $100–$300 per window (Angi), or $100–$500 (HomeGuide). Upper-story or complex installs can reach $600 or more per window (Angi). Labor is roughly 25–35% of the total project cost (HomeGuide).
What affects the cost of window replacement
- Frame material: vinyl and aluminum cost least; wood and composite cost the most.
- Window size and style: bay, bow and casement windows cost more than single-hung or sliding.
- Insert vs full-frame: full-frame replacement adds labor and materials.
- Glass package: Low-E coatings and triple-pane glass raise the price.
- Number of windows: larger projects usually lower the per-window price.
- Upper-floor access: second-story windows take more time and equipment.
- Frame repairs: rotted sills or framing add repair work.
- Local labor rates: prices vary by state and city.
Search interest peaks in spring and summer. Many installers book up then; getting quotes in fall or winter can help with scheduling.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace 10 windows?
About $4,500–$15,000 for single-hung windows installed (HomeGuide), depending on material and glass.
What is the cheapest window replacement option?
Vinyl insert windows are usually the most affordable: about $350–$800 per window installed (Fixr).
